Every Heart A Doorway is a phenomenal novel about how children cope with their lives when they are dumped back in an unwanted reality after their adventures in magical lands. Between not being believed in by their parents and not feeling like they belong in the "real" world, these children are left alone.
That's when Eleanor West comes to help. She is the headmaster of a Home where these children go to try and come to terms with the fact that they will most likely never return to those magical lands.
Non-spoiler Review
We're first introduced to the main character, Nancy, an asexual girl that traveled to a dark land. She returned from her journey to one of the several magical lands and her parents believe she experienced some kind of trauma that led to her imagining a whole world. So her parents leave her at the care of Eleanor. When she arrives at her bedroom she meets her roommate, a bright and restless girl named Sumi. After therapy and orientation, where she learns how the magical lands are divided, she is awaken by screams. Those screams lead her to a mystery that she and a handful of her new-found schoolmates need to get to the heart of. By any means necessary.
Despite being a really short novel there's not a single moment without action or feeling that always keeps us wanting to know what comes next. I found myself attached to all of the main characters. If I were in the shoes of any of those children I would definitely clasp the thought that one day I would make it back. They all wanted to do so. To leave the "real" world and wonder back in those lands. Because for them, that was the real world.
After we, readers, alongside the characters, find out the reason behind the screams I grew suspicious of everyone. There were, in my opinion, no clues that led to the one responsible. And the more things happened the more I was intrigued and really anxious to solve the big mystery around the story. Once Nancy and the others arrive to an answer, what happens left me speechless. It was incredibly strong and I believe that if it was up to me I wouldn't be able to do it. This novel was a roller-coaster of emotions. And the ending was left opened giving a vast possible continuations to this story.
I believe Seanan McGuire has a way with words that could capture the attention of even those who aren't avid readers. And that's one of the main reasons why I gave 5 stars to this novel and also the reason why I will without a doubt continue with this series.
