I have to be honest: this took a really long time to narrow down to only 6 books but I did it. The year ended 5 days ago and only now I came with a top 6.
I'd like to start with an honorable mention to The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey. I really really really loved this book but unfortunately it didn't make the cut.
And now I'm going to count my top 6 books of 2016 from my 6th favorite to my favorite one. So let's go!
- Number 6: George by Alex Gino
This is a Middle Grade book about a transgender kid. When everyone looks at George they see... a boy. But she knows that she's a girl. She has always felt like she's a girl. So when their teacher says that they're going to do a play of Charlotte's Web, George can't help but memorize all the lines for Charlotte. Despite being great at interpreting Charlotte the teacher tells George that she can't do it because Charlotte is a girl and George "isn't". The main reason why I loved this book was how real it felt. It was really engaging and how some of the characters were completely fine with George being a girl - and how other characters went from confusion to acceptance - was really amazing.
- Number 5: Whispers In Autumn by Trisha Leigh
This is a Young Adult dystopian book about Earth after an alien invasion. We meet Althea (from whose point of view we follow the story) right in the beginning where she basically tells us what has happened. How the aliens control the people's minds and their emotions and how it doesn't work with her, she's different. If you are already like "No, not the chosen one trope again!", I'm going to stop you right there. This is a different take on the chosen one trope. That's when Lucas comes in. When Althea meets Lucas she discovers he's like her immune. I think that this is my favorite dystopian ever. Okay, I'm certain this is my favorite dystopian of all-time. I loved Althea right from the first page and can't wait to read the third book in the series - since I've already read the 2nd one.
- Number 4: Every Heart A Doorway by Seanan McGuire
I won't get into this book because I have a review up for it. If you want to know what the book's about and my thoughts on it you can go here. I will just say that I'm really curious as how this story will continue after what happened in the end.
- Number 3: Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them The Original Screenplay by J.K. Rowling
Same as the previous book, I won't get into this book because there's already a review up on the blog. So you can check it out in here. I'm eager to know where Newt's adventures will lead him from now on. And let's not forget the future creatures that might be introduced!
- Number 2: Afterworlds by Scott Westerfeld
The first thing I have to say about this novel is: amazing concept. Having two different stories inside the same book and the fact that the main character in the contemporary story is the one writing the fantasy/paranormal story was phenomenally well thought out. On the contemporary part we have the beginning of Darcy's career as an author. I really liked all the insight we had on this world and the love interest as well. On the fantasy/paranormal part we got to read Darcy's debut novel where Lizzie finds herself with the ability of traveling between the world of the living and the afterworld. It all happens after a tragic incident she's in. I really wished we had a second book because I'd really enjoy knowing what happened after with both Darcy and Lizzie.
- Number 1: Aristotle And Dante Discover The Secrets Of The Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz
This became my favorite book of all time. I laughed, I cried, I was angry at it. Basically it was the perfect emotional rollercoaster in my opinion. This novel tells the story of Aristotle as he meets Dante and how both discover what friendship and love is really about. I can barely say my thoughts on this because every time I think about this book all that comes out is "I love it". And that's it pretty much. I loved the atmosphere, the plot, the background stories, the characters, the emotions. I'll have a review up for it next week so look forward to my fangirling on that post!
That's it. These were my top 6 books of 2016. I hope you enjoyed it and let me know in the comments what your favorite books were!
Goodbye, book royalty! And don't forget to always keep reading!
