Since it's the 1st of January I'm giving you my December Wrap-up.
Between anthologies, novels and graphic novels I read a total of 8 books with an average of 4.6 stars. I'm going to give a short opinion on each book. Besides Every Heart A Doorway I still haven't uploaded reviews for these books. With the exception of Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them The Original Screenplay all books where for the #DiversityDecBingo reading challenge.
The books are in order in which I read them. Let's get into the books now!
The first book I read was Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell. I actually started reading it in November but only finished in December. I went into this book without expecting much because everyone said that Fangirl is Rowell's best book. But this is my favorite book by her so far. I connected a lot with Eleanor when it comes to being a victim of bullying and feeling misplaced. I really loved how the relationship between Eleanor and Park grew. And also how Park learned to think for himself instead of following what his "friends" think. I gave this book a total of 5 stars on Goodreads and it is one of my favorite books that I read in 2016.
The first graphic novel I read in the month of December was Blue Is The Warmest Color by Julie Maroh. I heard it was the best F/F graphic novel and it didn't disappoint at all. It is an amazing coming of age and coming out story that touched me since I identify as a bisexual. Coming out is a difficult process to go through because of the reaction of the people around us. Clémentine had a fight going on inside of her when it came to the feelings she had for Emma and it was relatable for me because I've gone through a similar case. The only reason why I only gave 4.5 stars on Goodreads was because of the huge amount of cheating that happened throughout the story.
Every Heart A Doorway by Seanan McGuire was the book I read afterwards and (excuse the excitement) OH. MY. GOD. This book is a great fantasy with a pinch of a murder mystery. The main character is a good representation of an asexual teen girl (do take into account that since I'm not asexual this is solely my own opinion). The several doors to other worlds that only open when the kids really need it was a great ideal for a book. Just imagine how amazing it would be to have several doors to several worlds. Nancy was not a typical character in my opinion and it helped me to like the book even more. I gave it 5 stars on Goodreads and I can't wait for the sequel!
Next I finished Afterworlds by Scott Westerfeld. Can I say how amazingly thought out this book was? It had a contemporary story where the main character was a writer and then a fantasy story that was written by the main character of the first story! Which means two books in one. Darcy, the writer, is a demisexual 19-year-old that is having her novel published (lucky her) and her part of the book is the beginning of her career as an author. Lizzie, the main character of Darcy's novel, finds herself in the middle of a terrorrist attack and she becomes able to walk among the dead. Though I know a sequel won't happen, I really would like these stories to be continued because they ended quite abruptly. I gave this book 5 stars on Goodreads.
George by Alex Gino was the only MG I read this year and I am so glad I chose to read it. This book portrays the innocence of children extremely well. George's best friend really embraces the fact that George's a girl even if she sees the body of a boy. George's brother does so as well but the fact that her mom becomes angry with George's "choices" - though well portrayed - can be a trigger warning for people that went through rejection from their parents. That aside this novel was incredibly emotional and touching to me and I appreciated all characters with the exception of the bullies. I gave this book 5 stars on Goodreads.
After watching the movie I received in the mail Fantastic Beast And Where To Find Them The Original Screenplay by J.K. Rowling and I didn't resist and had to read it right away. Newt Scamander is to me a better main character than Harry Potter was. The story around the American wizarding world in the 1920s is more interesting than what we got in the original storyline. All the beasts that we read about are amazing. And the fact that we get to know more of Grinderwald's story is even better. I'm crossing my fingers and hoping they continue to release the screenplays for these movies and that they keep the gorgeous covers. I gave this screenplay 5 stars on Goodreads.
Ms. Marvel #1 No Normal was indeed a great choice of comic book. We needed a revamp of Ms. Marvel and I couldn't ask for anything more than what we got. Kamala Khan can be both a badass superhero and a average and relatable teenager. And I think that's why I liked this comic book. I'm not a huge Marvel fan but I really enjoyed the beginning of this girl's story. I can't wait to continue reading this and I'm probably going to read all the other available issues this year. After giving it much thought I gave this first issue 4 stars on Goodreads because I think there's still place for more growth.
Interim Goddess Of Love by Mina V. Esguerra was my first interaction with Philipino mythology and I was not disappointed. This novel is the first instalment in the Interim Goddess Of Love trilogy and it was a cute beginning to this story. I was really in need to read a cute contemporary to end this year with all the feelings. I felt like the story-telling of this novel was a little bit strange though and that's probably why I didn't give a higher rating to it. This modernized version of Philipino mythology made me extremely curious to go and read the facts behind it. I can't wait to continue reading this trilogy and I hope I can finish it this year. I gave this book 4 stars on Goodreads.
And that's it for the wrap-up of the last month of 2016. I would say it was a great reading month both in terms of quantity and quality. I hope 2017 stays just as good.
This week you can expect the review for Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them The Original Screenplay as well as my #DiversityBingo2017 TBR, Top 5 Wednesday, Top 10 Books Of 2016 and January Anticipated Releases.
That's all for now. Don't forget to always keep reading, book royalty!
